Using Date Columns to Track Deadlines Without a Calendar Tool

Deadline tracking fails when dates are stored somewhere separate from the work they apply to. A date column keeps the deadline on the record itself, so filtering for overdue work takes seconds instead of cross-referencing two tools.

1

Attach Deadlines Directly to Records

Add a date column to any table to capture due dates, scheduled dates, or expiry dates. The date lives on the row it applies to, not in a separate calendar event that someone has to manually link. When the record is updated, the date stays with it.

2

Sort and Filter by Date to See What's Next

Sort your table by due date to see the most urgent items at the top. Filter to show only records due this week to get a working list without scrolling through everything. Combine with a Status filter to exclude already-completed items from the view.

3

Formula Columns Can Calculate Days Remaining

Pair a date column with a formula column to calculate how many days remain until the deadline. The number updates automatically every day without anyone touching it. When the value hits zero or goes negative, the record surfaces at the top of a sorted view — a lightweight alert without needing a notification system.
